A criminal database is a compilation of criminal records from a variety of sources, including local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as courthouses and other public records. The information contained in a criminal database can include everything from traffic violations to more serious offenses such as felonies and misdemeanors.
While there are many private companies that maintain their own criminal databases, the most comprehensive and authoritative criminal database in the United States is the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). The NCIC is maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and is used by law enforcement agencies nationwide.
